GPS Review for Garmin, Magellan, and Tomtom

I get my license in two weeks and I’m looking for a GPS system.
I looked around the Garmin and TomTom sites very briefly but I’d like to get some opinions first.
I’d like to keep it for as long as possible so I could use it both locally and cross-country.
Also, of course, I’m looking for the lowest price possible.
Any recommendations?

i bought my bf a garmin gps for xmas a nuvi 200? hes a truck driver and the store told me “oh of course its great for a trucker driver and online you can downlaod tons of maps for free”!!! haha heres my question where online do you download the maps???? i see clearly on the garmin.com site where you can get the extra software (mostly free) but the maps cost money(like 99 dollars). plus there is nothing for a truck driver. anyone know any sites or links. or better gps out there?
