I am looking to buy a handheld GPS unit, and it needs to be a model that can be mounted on a bicycle. The bike is a road bike, but I want to make sure the GPS holder is secure and will not let the GPS be damaged. I would prefer a Garmin GPS (particularly the Nuvi) because the screen is larger. Do you have any suggestions where I can find a mount or what would be the best one to use? Thanks!

yes! they are all NMEA 2.0 AND Garmin. The serial port is not always going to be a DB9, they are usually going to be a round 4 pin connector. You can buy a premade cable from Garmin or a connector from www.purplecomputing.com.
Depending on the model, you may not be able to use it on 12V, but will need to provide it 5V.
I do know that the GPS2+, GPS3+ series will run on 12V but the older GPS18, GPS10 require 5V. But all are Garmin and NMEA2.0
You need to go into setup, scroll down and select NMEA.

I am looking at cars, and it seems like if you want a GPS navigation system it costs thousands more, but if you go to circuit city or somewhere where they sell those hand-help GPS navigation units like from Garmin etc. they cost only a couple hundred. Is there a difference between these two that I can’t see which explains why the car navigation systems cost so much more?
